It was in the dark ages of community development when , a group of Strath residents saw the need for a local community centre, and with much grunting, growling and the odd select word, much consultation and many meetings, the Strath Neighbourhood Centre (SNC) came into being.
Initially located in a small cottage at 1 High St Strathalbyn, the obvious lack of space and facilities drove the decision to look for alternative facilities, more suited to the growing needs of the centre. A move to Reg Sisson's Centre then followed.
An opportunity to move to a better facility became available.
The Strathalbyn Senior Citizens Club building, a sound older structure (owned by the Alexandrina Council), with potential, was identified as more than suitable, an agreement was negotiated with the Senior Citizens club, and the transfer of the lease was duly completed.
To make the building more versatile, and able to accommodate the growing needs of the SNC, additional office and meeting space was build (with funding from, Fund My Neighbourhood Grant).
SNC moved into their new home during the Covid 19 crisis.
With much dedication, and passion the centre survived, assisting many to battle through the Covid pandemic.
This brief history, barely scratches the surface of the Centre's true beginnings.
